Why Lemon Trees?
Of all cultivated plants, Lemon Trees are one of the most efficient at removing CO2 from the atmosphere (see Study). They are also drought tolerant, don’t attract rodents, are low-maintenance, are used in most cultural cuisines and are considered an attractive ornamental tree. As a campus symbol, Lemon Trees will inspire the next generation to care for the ecology of our planet as part of a sustainable future.
A Top CO2 Reducer
Among all cultivated plants, lemon trees are among the top reducers of CO2 from the atmosphere.
Lemon trees do not have invasive root systems. Their root ball to canopy ratio is very small at a 1:2 ratio thus are not a threat to surrounding paved surfaces. They also grow well in minimum dirt conditions such as pots.
Lemon trees are drought tolerant, and require little fertilizer and care. In arid climates, lemons are recommended as a preferred drought tolerant ornamental landscape tree.
Minimum Fall Hazard
Lemon Trees top out at 15-20′ and have bushy branch and trunk structures that are not conducive to climbing. They also are structurally sound so have little risk of large falling branches.
Farm to Table
Lemons are grown around the world and are used in the cuisine of most cultures. In Hawaii, 97.5% of lemons are imported. Growing locally can a profitable opportunity that also lowers the environmental impacts of importing lemons.
Due to the lemon’s high acidity, pest and rodent issues are minimized.
